Wheelchair Accessible Transit History

Wheelchair Accessible Transit provides a specialized service to individuals with special needs throughout Ontario. Wheelchair Accessible Transit offers a 24-hour pre-booked service as well as same day service, based on availability, to customers. Their elevated level of services and commitment to their customers has allowed the organization to be able to provide same-day service to customers within 30 minutes anywhere in Toronto.

The vehicles that provide these services are converted mini-vans and extended size passenger vans which can accommodate from one to six wheelchairs as well as friends, aides, escorts, and family members. The conversion made to these vehicles allows passengers to be escorted into the van using a built-in ramp or a power lifter, depending on the vehicle. Once the wheelchair is in the vehicle, it is positioned appropriately and strapped down using a Q-Straint system or Sure-Lok tie down system that hooks the wheelchair from four sides and creates a secure seat for the customer. A shoulder and lap are then used, as in any standard vehicle seating arrangement.

Wheelchair Accessible Transit has worked closely with conversion manufacturers and Wheel Trans to develop the most optimal wheelchair accessible vehicle for the accessible transportation industry.

By continuously working with engineers to develop better modified vehicles and embracing best practices in the industry, Wheelchair Accessible Transit will continue to offer the best service as well as the best types of the latest modern vehicles.A strong relationship has developed between Wheelchair Accessible Transit and its patrons which is a major contributing factor for its robust growth. By understanding the needs of customers and being able to accommodate their needs, Wheelchair Accessible Transit allows individuals to become more independent in their day to day lives.

Vehicles are built with safety, quality, and reliability. The vehicles exceed the standards set out by the Provincial Safety and Standards regulations, the Ontario Highway Traffic Act Regulations and Federal Canadian motor vehicle standards for safety. All the vehicles are converted Dodge Sprinters (assorted sizes), Dodge Caravans, Chevrolet Ventures, Chevy Uplanders and Dodge RAMS. These vehicles are governed by the Ministry of Transportation’s rules and regulations, and must have Bus/P.D.P (Physical Disabled Person) certified vehicle inspection in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.

Wheelchair Accessible Transit drivers are professional and the best in the industry. Every driver brings with them many years of hands-on experience, training, and dedication in providing high quality accessible transportation. All drivers are municipally licensed and are required to complete refresher courses bi-annually. In addition, Wheelchair Accessible Transit requires in-house continuous training. Every driver must complete the training within a period set out by management.
