Alex Matrosov typifies the Canadian immigrant experience. He arrived in Canada with little more then the shirt on his back, worked hard, raised a family and with a keen entrepreneurial vision achieved considerable success.

Alex Matrosov helped pioneer wheelchair accessible transportation in the greater Toronto area and now operates a multi million dollar transportation company. He literally learned the business from the ground up starting up as a limousine driver at Pearson International Airport.

In 1995 Alex founded Toronto Para Transit, today the leading provider of wheelchair accessible transportation in Ontario. Over the last 20 years he has developed expertise that are unmatched in the industry.

Alex is a Russian immigrant. He immigrated to Canada with his expectant wife in 1976 virtually penniless. He arrived at Pearson International Airport from Ukraine without being able to speak a word of English. He immediatly started taking English as a second language course while driving a taxi for Avenue Taxi - a Richmond Hill based company. He purchased a taxi and for three years he worked 7 days a week - 18 hours a day to make ends meet.

In 1979 Alex saw greater opportunities in the limousine business so he sold his taxi and purchased a nine-passenger stretch Cadillac limousine and began working for Airlift Limousine with Toronto livery plate license. A year later he obtained his Airport Limousine Driver License and worked at the airport for two years - again putting in 18 hour days for Airlift Limousine.

In 1982 Alex obtained his taxi cab driver's license from the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto and in 1983 he purchased his first taxi cab plate and associated with "A Quick Taxi Brokerage".

Here he developed a successful and expanding business transporting children with special needs. One of his major clients was McMluskey Transportation. His relationship with McCluskey has now spanned over twenty years.

This is when he developed a passion and expertise for the business of assisting people with unique transportation needs.

In 1988 he was approached by the general manager of taxi company to head up a special wheelchair accessible division. In 1990 he was asked by the provincial Minister of transportation to work on a special provincial pilot study on developing wheelchair accessible transportation. The provincial government provided monetary incentives for individuals who would convert mini vans into wheelchair accessible vehicles.

In 1991 Alex started a new company specializing in accessible transportation. As President (and a driver) of this company he built a fleet of 6 cars. This was one of the first companies in Ontario with a dedicated fleet of accessible vehicles.

Alex's expertise and success became well known in the transportation industry. In early 1995 Alex was approached by the owner of Royal Taxi to establish and lead a wheelchair accessible transportation division. He accepted the challenge.

Alex founded Toronto Para Transit in February 1995 to administer a $1.8 million five year contract with Wheel-Trans. In order to service the TTC Wheel-Trans contract he significantly expanded his fleet.

As a result of the excellent work his company was doing for Wheel-Trans, in June 2000 Toronto Para Transit was awarded another 5 year contract - this time for 7.8 million dollars. Again, Alex expanded his fleet, this time to 20 wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Over the next 5 years Alex expanded the company with new contracts with the Toronto District School Board, Workers Safety and Insurance Bureau, the Cardinal Bus Company, Stock Transportation and the Toronto Catholic School Board.

Toronto Para Transit also provides accessible transportation for the public in general with significant airport component. TPT has clients from all over the world who use them for trips to and from the airport on a pre-arranged basis.

In March 2003 Alex established a sister company, wheelchair Accessible Transit Inc. which is operated by his son Jack. Wheelchair Accessible Transit's purpose is to focus on building the private sector component of the industry such as nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, insurance companies etc.

Today, the two integrated companies working through a central dispatch system are the largest provider of wheelchair accessible transportation in the Greater Toronto Area. The two companies have over 28 employees with a total of over 40 vehicles including six larger vehicles that can accommodate multiple wheelchairs.
